Going Gray

Everything under the sun is in chaos. The situation is excellent.
– Mao Zedong (1893 – 1976)

Forget it, Jake. It’s Chinatown.

Language is conceived in sin and science is its redemption.

Stalking Horse

[Jeremiah and Bear Claw hunt elk]

Jeremiah:

Wind’s right, but he’ll just run soon as we step out of these trees.

Bear Claw:

Trick to it. Walk out on this side of your horse.

Jeremiah:

What if he sees our feet?

Bear Claw:

Elk don’t know how many feet a horse has!

– “Jeremiah Johnson” (1972)

Epsilon Theory: The Donkey of Guizhou

There were no donkeys in Guizhou until an eccentric took one there by boat; but finding no use for it he set it loose in the hills. A tiger who saw this monstrous-looking beast thought it must be divine. It first surveyed the donkey from under cover, then ventured a little nearer, still keeping a respectful distance.

The Dude Abides: China in the Golden Age of Central Bankers

A compassionate man once caught a turtle. He wanted to make it into soup, but unwilling to be accused of taking life, he boiled a pan full of water and, placing a narrow rod over the pan, said to the turtle, “If you can get across the pan, I will set you free.”

The turtle was in no doubt as to the intentions of the man. But he did not want to die. So, summoning up all his will, he accomplished the impossible.

Macro view: "China Likes to Experiment" - podcast

Stuart Leckie, chairman of Stirling Finance shared his macro views at the SIX Swiss exchange listing of the CSOP Source FTSE China A50 UCITS ETF in early April. A podcast is available of a topical Q&A session on China. Themes covered included:

An overview of the Chinese housing market and the implications of sustained high real estate prices

The actions undertaken by the Chinese government to promote the yuan as a more international currency

How the government is working to attract capital inflows from foreign investors

Epsilon Theory - Rosebud

Today's note, "Rosebud", looks at recent Chinese monetary policy shifts through an Epsilon Theory lens. The Chinese government's rationale for the policy shift has been carefully constructed for international consumption, using the language of modern economic theory to obfuscate rather than illuminate. It's not a lie, but it's far from the essential truth. Economic growth in China may or may not be weakening, but these policy shifts indicate that the economic growth path is definitely less certain than it was even a few months ago.

Epsilon Theory - The Power of Why, Exhibit 4,512 in a Continuing Series

No man is an Iland, intire of it selfe;

Every man is a peece of the Continent, a part of the maine;

If a Clod bee washed away by the Sea, Europe is the lesse, as well as if a Promontorie were, as well as if a Mannor of thy friends or of thine owne were;

Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankinde;

And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;

It tolls for thee.
